Version 0.1.0
Start with the Mac app. The panels for Premiere Pro and After Effects need the app running, because the app does the transcription.

This is a preview build. The Mac app is not yet signed by Apple: the first time you open it, Control-click the app and choose Open, or allow it under System Settings › Privacy & Security. Windows and Intel Mac versions are coming. Checksums are also in SHA256SUMS.txt.
The After Effects panel is not yet signed by Adobe. To install it, allow unsigned panels once with defaults write com.adobe.CSXS.12 PlayerDebugMode 1, then unzip it into ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/CEP/extensions/ai.addis.captions.cep and restart After Effects.
Pick how it transcribes
Open Addis Captions, then Settings. Choose On this computer and download the model once (499 MB). Nothing leaves your computer, and it needs about 1.6 GB of free memory while captioning. Or choose Addis AI cloud and paste an API key.
- In Addis Captions, open Settings and choose Install panels, or double-click the panel file.
- In Premiere Pro, open Window, then Plugins, then Addis Captions.
- Pick the audio track with Amharic speech and choose Create captions. The captions arrive as an SRT in your project, ready for a caption track.
- Install the panel (see the note below the downloads).
- In After Effects, open Window, then Extensions, then Addis Captions.
- Choose Create captions. Each caption becomes its own text layer, timed to the speech. One Undo removes them all.
How captions are made
- Captions break at pauses, with at most two lines of 42 characters and between 0.83 and 7 seconds on screen. You can change these in Settings.
- Each caption is timed from Addis Scribe's word timestamps and adjusted so it appears as the speaker starts and stays until they finish.
- SRT and VTT carry text and timing only, so style them in your editor. Export ASS to keep the font, colours and word highlighting.
- Addis Scribe writes no punctuation yet, so captions break at pauses rather than at the end of sentences.
Building your own?
The same captions are available in the API: add timestamps=word to a Scribe transcription, or ask for format=srt.
